Size 2 stinger hook, size 1 rear hook, 55mm shank.

4" body, 7" total length.

New for 2023, I have made several revisions to the Trap Rat. The biggest change is that I have eliminated the longing, stiff stinger tail in favor of a short stinger on a stiff loop that creates leverage with the body hook similar to the style of the two footer, yet still resists fouling. This is easier to cast and results in dramatically less gill and throat damage to fish and converts strikes at a higher rate. I am now using a different head design that places the foam at a forward angle, making it more visible. The improved, wedge shape of the nose does an even better job of cutting into the water like a plow. This fly will “walk” or dodge side to side if the right stripping cadence with a light leader is used. I have eliminated the eyes to make room for the glow tab. Like the other new iterations of my mice, I am using a 4mm composite foam that is more buoyant and durable than 3mm. By using a shaved rabbit strip for the tail and longer legs, the trap rat has more movement than ever.

The trap rat is my answer to a fully grown mouse fly pattern. The body material sheds water very well on the first false cast, making it substantially easier to throw than any other comparably large mouse pattern I have found or been able to create.

Anyone who has spent much time fishing large top water flies for trout can tell you that one of the biggest challenges is converting strikes to successful hookups and in turn, landed fish. The positioning of its pair of hooks work together to catch in the mouth of a trout that touches the fly in any way.

After dozens and dozens of iterations and variations of different arrangements of hooks, this one has risen to the top as one of the most consistent fish catchers. When all else fails, the trap rat and it’s epically large wake can draw out giant fish that simply aren’t willing to move for a smaller meal.
