The Impossible Meat is designed with two main objectives- to be the flashiest and fastest sinking fly you have ever used. Seriously, be very careful casting these, especially at first as you get used to the weight. The body material has very little drag in the water, allowing the giant tungsten bead to get you down even with fast retrieves or in deep water. For whatever reason, the Impossible Meat seems to pull a higher percentage of Brown Trout than other patterns when fished in waters with Rainbow or Cutthroat.
Inspiration for this pattern comes from a variety of sources, most notably Coffey’s Sparkle Minnow. I just wanted it on a jig hook that wouldn’t snag bottom as easily, more flash, and heavier. The beauty of flashy flies is that they tend to generate a territorial reaction strike, meaning you can catch fish with them that are not actively or even opportunistically feeding.
the Impossible Meat is too heavy to fish on rods under a 6 weight. It’s also much easier to control with a short leader, although it fishes best on a long leader. Slow your casting rhythm down slightly and keep an oval pattern going to prevent head injury and cracked rod blanks.
